Indexing Fact and Fiction: Creating a Comprehensive Bibliography for Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves
ENGL 511: Theorizing the Digital in Literary Study (Spring 2015)

Graduate students in our ENGL 511: Theorizing the Digital in Literary Study seminar undertook this bibliography project with the aim of indexing the myriad extra-textual references included in Mark Z. Danielewski's novel House of Leaves. Danielewski's text, which pokes fun at academic discourse through the inclusion of bibliographic footnotes, refers both to a corpus of "actual" bibliographic sources and to a catalogue of invented, fictional sources. Students were assigned individual sections of Danielewski's text and, using Zotero, constructed tagged bibliographic records for every source mentioned in their particular section. Those individual files were then combined to form one single bibliographic index, identifying over 2700 source entries.
