Fall 2016 ENGL428: Digital Humanities

McGann Response

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 2 McGann’s argument offers a multidimensional approach to the relationship between humanists as people and the humanities. He argues “integrating digital technology into our scholarship will have to be pursued on as broad a scale as possible” (51). At the same time, he also states, “we have to restore textual and bibliographical work to the center of what we do” (51). McGann’s points relate to the relationship between humanists and the humanities by examining the relationship between the objects and subjects humanists research and explore and how that relationship is changing due to the digital humanities. McGann believes humanists as people have to integrate information technology into their scholarship, but in order to do that, they must understand “the languages…[associated] with our proliferating digital technologies” (53). He believes that humanities scholars should learn the inner workings of the technology they are using to promote their scholarship

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 3 McGann also refers to the problem of “scholarly communication operat[ing] in a highly restricted and specialized market” (55). McGann compares the scholarly publishing market with the general publishing market and finds the key difference is the scholarly market is clearly “closed” (55). The scholarly market being “closed” illustrates the point McGann was making earlier about integrating digital technology into scholarship. The integration of digital technology, using objects, in order to promote scholarship needs to happen in order for scholarly publication to be as widely-accessible as possible. The nature of scholarly publishing is itself closed, but that doesn’t mean the manner in which it is published needs to be hard to use. For example, using an online free version of a book, such as we are in ENGL 428 can lead to collaboration and more discussion in the field. More discussion leads to easier access to scholarship, which is what McGann realizes needs to happen in order for the subject of humanities to be successful.
