Mullen / Sample Prompt: 9/26
¶ 1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 For class today, we surveyed a number of blog posts, all of which date from 2010-2011 and all of which respond to key controversies facing digital humanities scholarship.
¶ 2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 0 In Lincoln Mullen’s “We’re All Digital Humanists Now,” for example, Mullen argues for an inclusive definition of DH, viewing digital humanities scholarship as a “spectrum” of activity, investment, and skill development. Mullen composed and published this post in April of 2010 and, about nine months later, Stephen Ramsay delivered his MLA presentation entitled “Who’s In and Who’s Out” (which we discussed last Friday), effectively dismissing Mullen’s and others’ pleas for inclusiveness in DH.
¶ 3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 But let’s suppose, for a moment, that Mullen is right, and that digital humanities scholarship may be seen as comprising a “spectrum.” What kinds of categorical positions might that “spectrum” contain? Where might some of the authors we’ve surveyed in class so far (figures like Jerome McGann, Lisa Spiro, Stephen Ramsay, and Melissa Terras, for example) fit within that “spectrum”? In your blog responses, I’d like to see you identify and define at least three categories of DH scholarship / production and position those categories along a “spectrum.” Be specific in your description of each category: what skills or training might be required for inclusion in it? What kinds of projects or activities might be associated with it? How do the kinds of scholarly activities taking place within one category differ from those taking place in another?
