Fall 2016 ENGL428: Digital Humanities

DH – Fundamentally Changing us All

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 1 Digital Humanities is changing us all, or at least the people who are studying the humanities. I think it’s a little bit of a reach to suggest that DH is going to change people fundamentally to the core and completely change our way of thinking and life, but it’s definitely going to change us somehow, no doubt about that.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 2 Though I believe that the context of the humanities is not going to change (people are still going to analyze Poe and Dickinson), how they’re going about it is changing. Digital humanities doesn’t mean we need to completely let go of what we as English and other humanities scholars are studying, but rather our tools for this studying has changed.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 1 There are so many more opportunities for peer review, research and digital tools than before and we need to incorporate this into our academic endeavors. I think that DH is making us become more interactive with other people are we’re gaining new perspectives on literature because other people’s opinions and ideas are so much more accessible.

4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 1 With gaining new perspectives comes innovation. Scholars aren’t just writing academic papers on a new topic, but distributing it in different ways such as building websites and blogs to voice their thoughts. The creativity spectrum when it comes to English Literature has become broader to incorporate these tools.

5 Leave a comment on paragraph 5 1 I think the risk of DH changing people and how they see academia is that some people can’t catch up. With digital tools, it’s always going to change with new updates and new software. The risk of making us all digital humanities and studying our fields in this way is that for some, digital tools do not come easy because of lack of regular use or because it’s not the way they were taught. Does that mean that those people who don’t know how to build a website are now irrelevant in the humanities field? Or that their academic work won’t be as good?

6 Leave a comment on paragraph 6 2 DH will change our academic work or at least how it is presented, but making it change us fundamentally is going to outcast some people. As said in all of my previous blog posts, balance is key when it comes to Digital Humanities and I think we’re off to a good start
