The cover includes the background being a murky green, an enlarged pig, and a factory in front. Choosing a cover image for the book was difficult and frustrating. I wanted to add so much on the cover but I didn’t want it to be too much. I decided to pick the things I felt were the most beneficial to understanding and getting the main comprehension of the book itself.

I decided on a murky green background because I think it gives a good representation of downtown Chicago in the early 1900’s. Chicago wasn’t a clean town in the time of immigrants migrating there from places around the world. More specifically, the immigrants faced hardships of poverty and living day to day with raggedy clothes, week old food, and dirty jobs at local factories. The color represents the disgusting aura that Chicago displayed at the time but also the greed that politicians and Americans had at that time. Green is very symbolic for money. Money was hard to obtain for immigrants and were treated unfairly when it came to getting paid. The green background not only represents the uncleanliness of the book, but a symbol of the faltered image of the ‘American dream’ that everyone tries to obtain.

I also decided to place a pig on the cover photo. The pig is a very symbolic image throughout the story, so I felt like it was necessary to have a pig on the cover as well. In the book, the main characters’ work at a packing factory. A very unclean environment and very dangerous. They packed pigs and cows. The novel got pretty graphic when it went into details of the work life for a factory worker in downtown Chicago. The pig is also the reason the United States initiated the FDA (for proper cleaning and work environments). This is why I decided that a pig must be on my redesign, not only that, but the pig can also signify the dirty ways of politicians or leaders, and even corporate leaders. They wanted to make the most they could with spending as little as they could, creating a pig like nature of being sly, sneaky and disgusting.

The last thing I decided to put on my redesign cover was a photo of a factory. Again, this is a very symbolic image in the photo as the book as based on character, Jurgis, working in a beaten down factory, earning less than poverty wages to support him and his family. This factory represents what many immigrants worked to achieve. They wanted the ‘American Dream’ but what they failed to realize was that this American dream is hard to achieve. This factory is a representation of the hard work that everyone endures. The factory is a symbolic way of saying that no matter where you live, one will always have to work to maintain surviving.

I believe that my cover is a hybrid of both covers of old and new that the book itself had when I was researching cover photos. My cover is simple and original, but it also has the details like the newer versions do.

While redesigning Upton Sinclair’s, The Jungle, I decided to keep it simple and minimal.
