\u201cWe have to get going now, we can\u2019t wait to see if there\u2019s more to learn\u201d (63). In his essay on the Digital Humanities, Jerome McGann writes about major issues he sees in the field.\u00a0He argues\u00a0that while the world is being transformed by new technology, the humanities are struggling to catch up. At a recent humanities conference, he noticed\u00a0the attendees’\u00a0gloomy\u00a0outlook\u00a0on the field,\u00a0but he adds \u201cSomething else was troubling, however: the degree of ignorance about information technology and its critical relevance to humanities and scholarship\u201d (52). The people who are in the best place to make an impact on the field are\u00a0walking around feeling discouraged and hopeless, while\u00a0they are unaware of a solution available to them.\u00a0McGann believes this ignorance hurts the field more and more as funding is cut and the outside world fails to see the importance of the humanities. McGann urgently cries out to\u00a0anyone and everyone who\u00a0cares about\u00a0the humanities, begging them to take action and incorporate information technology into the field. He acknowledges that this is a significant undertaking, both financially and academically, but that it is the only chance at redeeming the field.<\/p>\n
McGann\u00a0suggests that one way\u00a0to improve and\u00a0execute this process\u00a0is\u00a0to first improve the relationship between man (subject) and tools or things (objects), the foundation of humanist scholarship. Part of the problem may be that we,\u00a0the humans, are intimidated by new or unfamiliar tools in the technological world, but\u00a0McGann\u00a0insists that\u00a0there is no time for fear anymore. \u201cToday we have to try to master some new things. We have to learn how to use them and master them\u201d (62). The tools are the key to transforming the field of humanities, and we must embrace them and utilize them as soon as possible. \u201cWe will do this by becoming students again \u2013 a role that, as educators and humanists, I think we\u2019re especially good at\u201d (63).
