As a PhD in engineering, Melissa Terras has a much more technical and scientific approach to how she views the study of digital humanities, compared to that of the other literary scholars we have read and discussed thus far. When the literary scholars write their essays, they have a type of literary flair to their composition that Terras’ essay does not. Her writing style within her essay is much more concise\u00a0and straight to the point. It does not hold much emotion either compared to some literary scholars who add in an optimistic\u00a0outlook to their approach to the digital humanities and its future.<\/p>\n
Terras, additionally, is extremely measured in her report. She does not spend time discussing the controversy within the study of the digital humanities, but rather prefers to focus on the concrete facts surrounding this field rather than pay close attention to the anecdotal evidence suggested. \u00a0Furthermore, Terras has a specific method she follows when approaching her research on the digital humanities: Terras includes a lit review, which she places at the beginning of her essay rather than having it continue on throughout the piece. She conducts 10 interviews with humanities computing scholars, includes a curricular comparison between the humanities and humanities computing, as well as taking textual analysis\u00a0of conference abstracts, which she includes within her essay through a series of tables and graphs. \u00a0This method and structuring she uses within her essay are also not typically oriented in literary essays on the digital humanities.<\/p>\n
Yet most notably, Terras does not try to define what the digital humanities are within her essay. Instead, she is just arguing that the digital humanities exist, which is not something we’ve seen in the previous essays we’ve gone over. The literary scholars covered previously in class, spend a large amount of their focus on defining, or finding a concise definition for what the digital humanities are. Terras may not be a literary\u00a0scholar, but her engineering background does give her a new outlook on the field and study of digital humanities, compared to those who have already immersed themselves within it.<\/p>\n
