Terras\u2019 background as a STEMmer instead of Humanist shines through in her writing as well as methodology.\u00a0 Overall, her writing is extremely technical and detailed in a sciencey, clinical fashion, rather than attempt to be coy and get us to infer the consequences of the DH as legitimate scholarship debate, she explicitly says early on in the article that this creates problems for new, emerging scholars as well as those who have been in the field for a while and are recent converts to the awesomeness that seems to be DH thus far. If the scholarship and technological advances are not seen by the powers that be as attempts at groundbreaking scholarship, then it creates the same problem that McGann notices in his article about the NINES project as a sort of catch all solution, except rather than attempt to make non-believers believe in the usefulness of the program and convert them over the the dark side, it attempts to set into place an ethos of sorts for the field.<\/p>\n
A good portion of the article is spent providing data that initially seems to be against DH, but ultimately tries to argue that in order to be seen as legitimate, the field as a whole needs to rethink the labelling of things. She argues that DH should call it a department like everyone else, not an \u2018institute\u2019, offer more degrees and major opportunities at the undergraduate level instead of waiting until someone is pursuing postgrad work, make more of an effort to get out of the UK\u2019s more prestigious institutions, etc. In other words, do everything a helluva lot differently than you are now if you want to have what you\u2019re doing be recognized as a visceral and valuable thing. The care she takes in providing what the other scholars we\u2019ve read have not, indicates that she\u2019s of the same mindset as they are, she just realizes in order to beat these traditionalists at their own game, DH needs to play in a similar manner and having the data, the cold, hard, indisputable data makes DH more akin to a scienctific, technological field which might be exactly what people want anyway\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
