After re-reading the article by Hayles, in an attempt\u00a0to shape a specific definition for reading, I came to the conclusion that there is no specific\u00a0definition we can come up with. Defining reading in light of Hayles argument is just like DH, it bears so many possibilities and multiple terms associated with it, such as\u00a0hyperreading, online reading, reading on the web, machine reading, etc. Defining reading in the era of the internet depends\u00a0on the writer and how he\/she evaluates it.<\/p>\n
However, reading before the internet, was that old popular skill that is the hobby of many\u00a0kids who grew up to become passionate about it because it opened so many horizons for them. People then had an intimate relationship with their books, from the time they own them,\u00a0because one book had one owner\u00a0who interacts\u00a0with it as if it was a person of flesh and blood. Besides, people would have to make a physical effort to buy the book, from the point\u00a0they step into the book store, to the point they arrive back home.\u00a0While nowadays, with the explosion of technology, hypertexts have become the easiest thing anybody can access, with just a click of a button. And there is not so much interaction with the text since many people have done the work for you by publishing their reviews and summaries\u00a0of the work.<\/p>\n
Having said that, nobody can ignore or deny the fact that reading has become a less intense and more relaxed activity with the help of the digital. People now (mostly) read physical literary books for joy, not necessity. Even if they read books for necessity (for a class for example), they (for the most part) would not do it without the help of the internet. For example, in order for them to fully understand the content of the novel, they would need to search the web for critical pieces written about the novel, or they would look for a summary, or an analysis, or even simpler, look up the meaning of words in an online dictionary. Therefore, even if some humanists might not like the invasion of the digital reading, it plays a significant role in the future of how we practice reading.<\/p>\n
