I envision initiatives to get minorities involved with humanities computing.\u00a0 If not involved, then at least interested, for chance that might change the pressure on what scholarship is completed.\u00a0 This would need to happen early on in an educational career, undergraduate at the latest.\u00a0 I don\u2019t write the grants; I can\u2019t imagine exactly what this initiative would look like.\u00a0 Probably a curriculum that could transfer to different universities, especially where student populations are diverse. We should recognize, even at the undergraduate level minorities aren\u2019t always represented in equal proportion<\/a> to their white peers.\u00a0 Even before trying to get students engaged with Digital Humanities, do we need to think about how POC are represented<\/a> in the traditional humanities departments?<\/p>\n

Some might get frustrated if DH were to take additional steps towards initiatives to include people of color and multicultural diversity.\u00a0 Skeptics, to avoid name calling, might say that we struggle enough to get funding and grants towards DH in the most normal, most white, situation.\u00a0 Why should we get distracted from that?\u00a0 I think Brittany C. said it in class last week, it\u2019s hard to save someone else when you are already drowning. In almost any instance, efforts towards inclusion brings more vibrancy, additional perspective, and increased value to a field, school, project, whatever it is.<\/p>\n

Inclusivity starts from the top down.\u00a0 A university with a diverse administration [in any way, gender, sexuality, race, socioeconomic background\u2026] should be more successful at educating and organizing for a diverse student body. In English studies, before we started to look at women writers, writers of color, or colonial literatures, our scholars resembled the subject: white men.\u00a0 We have discussed how only those with access to the best resources are able to take on DH, especially in addition to their other responsibilities at Universities.<\/p>\n

In universities that simply shut down \u2018old school\u2019 departments\u2026scholars must engage in the vernacular of digital forms that make us nervous, authoring <\/em>in them in order to better understand them and to recreate in technological spaces the possibility of doing the work that moves us.\u00a0 We need new practices and new modes of methodologies but also I theories of race, globalization, and gender. I fear I might have then McPherson\u2019s ideas and ran with them in my own direction.\u00a0 Her argument is much more academic, but the problem she introduces doesn\u2019t take a doctorate to understand.\u00a0 We recognize DH is white, okay, then what?\u00a0 McPherson argues for understanding the basic coding structures, if we did, it certainly would be easier to understand her argument.\u00a0 But you don\u2019t even need that much to be able to recognize more efforts should be taken to involve diversity in DH.\u00a0 Or the Humanities.\u00a0 Or even higher education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
