Volume X (Also sprach Zarathustra / Thus Spoke Zarathustra) is missing from the collection.

Volume VIII (The Will to Power, Book I) contains notes pertaining to Wharton's plans for her novel The Fruit of the Tree, including the observation that "50 grains of veronal is the minimum fatal dose," in addition to other markings and annotations. These notes are sometimes erroneously ascribes to Wharton's novel The House of Mirth; both works feature scenes of accidental overdose, though the date of Nietzsche volumes indicates that Wharton acquired the set after the publication of The House of Mirth.

The whole set is bound in half red morocco with marbeled endpapers, and Wharton's bookplate appears on each volume.

In his Edith Wharton's Library catalog, George Ramsden expresses doubt that Wharton ever owned the complete set (including Zarathustra), noting that the binder's marks and unnumbered spines are suggestive of her having purchased the volumes consecutively. In a 1908 letter that Wharton wrote to Sally Norton, she comments: "I am deep in my novel, & reading, as a diversion, between times, Jenseits von Gut und Böse. I have never read any Nietzsche before, except a glance at Zarathustra, which didn't tempt me, but this is great fun -- full of wit & originality & poetry -- dashes of Meredith and even Whitman. He has no system & not much logic, but wonderful flashes of insight, & a power of breaking through conventions that is most exhilerating, & clears the air as our thunderstorms do just now -- not! I think it is salutory, now and then, to be made to realize what he calls 'die Unwerthung aller Werthe," & really get back to a wholesome basis of naked instinct."

See Ramsden, p. 90 and Lewis and Lewis, eds., Letters (Scribners, 1988), p. 159.</text>
