Halloween Post

Leave a comment on paragraph 1 2 If I was one of the people commenting on Gannon’s thread, there’s one line above all else that sold me on his argument over the anonymous post, and that was “If what we do matters, who’s doing it matters even more”. Highlighting the opportunities provided by engaging with peers over new platforms is a great way to make the point that social media is an opportunity rather than something extraneous to the scholarly world.

Leave a comment on paragraph 2 1 Reading the anonymous post first does predispose one to empathize with anonymous regarding the strong push towards Tweeting and other social media outlets. It certainly seems like a burden on the academic when contextualized with research and attending conferences like he/she frames their argument. In that same vein of thought I think it’s petty of the tattooed professor to dismiss his argument on the basis that “conferences are the…sites of sexual harassment, copious amounts of alchohol, or misanthropic tendencies”. Surely it’s unfair to group all academic conferences in that same basket of deplorables.

Leave a comment on paragraph 3 0 Returning to what I brought up earlier, whatever pressure anonymous feels to participate in social media relating to their studies is dwarfed by the opportunity inherent in connecting with peers across the globe. The cost in time and effort is little compared to traditional publication, as  Brittany emphasized in our prompt. How can one argue against what Gannon says about using social media as a lever? Speaking from an uninformed position, I would imagine that the burden of posting occasionally or the pressure to do so isn’t that dramatic.

Leave a comment on paragraph 4 2 It seems important to address what Brittany mentioned in regards to the quick turnaround involved in blogs, tweets, etc. I think certainly it brings on a faster, less well thought out discussion that is prone to misunderstanding and heated emotions. But cost/benefit considered together, it seems too useful a medium to look upon as something that’s not useful in the academic sphere.
