Happy Slippy Trippiness: (Or the Effects of DH on a Traditional Humanist)

1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 0 Although there are several definitions of DH that we have discussed, none of them were as enjoyable to read as Chapter 20 given the alternation between snark and deathly sincerity. Forcier likening DH to an oil spill on the side of the road is both especially humorous and serious in the sense that comparing something to car excrement is both genius and ridiculous until time is taken to break the metaphor down.

2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 3 The slippage is the Humanities in general while the psychedelic, feel good, sludgy, bubbly rainbow represents forays into DH and the regular dark sludge is indicative of a technologically bereft field.  The key phrase from this is ‘depending on the angle’ and further down that DH is a stain that will never come out if you step in it. For lack of a better phrase, DH is the ‘Point of No Return’, because it represents a metamorphosis of both scholar and scholarship. Sources will be looked at differently. Time will cease to matter, no one will be rushing halfway across the world, pushing through a bunch of people who are only there to see one thing for two seconds, only to be searched by security to ensure the sanctity of their archive, ushered in, and for a brief moment- seconds, minutes, or hours- able to touch Time, the Universe, a testament to the awesomeness that is humanity wrapped up in a piece of vellum or parchment, the tiniest of statues, or the most threadbare remains of a tapestry.

3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 4 As for the question regarding whether DH fundamentally changes those who practice it, I think it can in the sense that there is a certain anxiety that is created because if you learn things one way and then suddenly start to embrace a newer method of research in the same manner that traditional humanists, etc like Ramsey, Kirschenbaum, etc do, the risk of constant uncertainty is quite high. DH is not recognized by the bureaucracy at large and as a result, it is forced to remain stagnant even while its staunchest defenders fight for its cause like Monsanto fights to take over the rest of our food supply. Job security, etc are seen to be put unnecessarily at risk given this gap between what is current versus what is expected.
