I’m going to offer the same advice I offered Lloyd and caution against including full versions of research papers on your website, for a couple of reasons.
First, they are liable to be downloaded and stolen by students looking for free papers on the Internet; you don’t want others taking credit for your work, I assume, nor do you want to encourage practices of plagiarism and cheating. Second, because these were assignments, the focus ought to lie not on the product per se (the paper itself) but on the process that you put into creating it. As such, rather than complete papers, I’d like to see short paragraphs describing the research that you did for a particular assignment, the sources that you consulted, and the argument that pieced together (think of this in terms of a short, 3-4 sentence abstract or “overview,” which comes across a bit more professionally). You can also describe what you learned from completing the assignment and, if you wish, post a section of the paper (like the intro paragraph …)
Hi Emmy, thank you for your comments!
As for the falling snow, it’s under “Settings” on the stats/main editing page. All of my pictures aside from the city/barn are original pictures, yes, I should probably designate that – thanks! It wouldn’t let me change the barn one for some reason.
For the drop downs, you have to make a new page, and then go into menus and individually link each one to the ‘parent’ page, and make sure the link is the same as the page you created. I had a hard time setting this up as well, I hope this clears things up even just a little!
Hey there, Luke. First of all, nice choice of theme (I used it too)! I think the falling snow adds a nice touch – I noticed this on Ali’s site too. How did you do this? Were there other types of animations you could choose from?
I like that you kept the Home page simple – I debated this for my own site and decided on going simple as well. I also think the Search bar is a helpful addition to the page that I didn’t think about with my site. Under the Social bar, are the icons supposed to link to your personal social media accounts? They directed me to the WordPress social media pages. I understand if you don’t want to post your personal accounts (I didn’t either), but I wanted to bring this to your attention in case you did want to link your accounts there.
The spoon bridge picture on your About page is a nice personal touch – go Minnesota! Your information is easy to read, and all of your links work. I like that you chose to write about yourself in the third person, because it sounds professional. Nice work getting a drop-down menu to work on your Projects tab – I couldn’t figure out how to do this on my own site. The links on your different pages here are all work. I appreciate that you split your work into the four different categories, because having one page with all of these works listed would be too overwhelming. I think more people will read your works because of this smart setup.
Your Contact page is good – nothing to critique there. Your Blog page is a nice addition to your website, because you can continue to add posts with each article you write for The Odyssey. I have one general question about your site: did you photograph any of the cover photos yourself, or are they images you found online / used from WordPress? I like the more personal-looking pictures like the spoon bridge and the dog – maybe you can use personal pictures for all of the images instead of using the WordPress ones (I believe the barn one and the NYC one come from WordPress)? The pictures are all good, but this might boost the personalized feel of your website even more. Overall, great job Luke, and I hope you keep up with your site in the future.
