Trick or Tweet

Leave a comment on paragraph 1 2 After reading Anonymous, I was on her side. (And I’ll be using ‘her’ because it sounds like a girl.)  She made good points that people would pay more attention to their phone rather than the speaker, but that is not to say that they don’t pay attention, and that  you don’t have to make your life and your work public in order to impress someone.

Leave a comment on paragraph 2 2 Then I started reading Gannon and he makes fair points of his own.  Why should using social media be limited to personal use when it is a tool that can spread the word of academia and allows you to get thousands of responses from people, and not all of them academics?  Social media is a part of the world.  You can’t shut it out, because it will always be there.  Even if you turn your phone off during a lecture, when you turn it back on, you will have notification waiting to be read. You may not be creating tweets of your own, but people you follow may say something and you will get notified. (Assuming that’s how Twitter works, as I don’t have one of my own.)

Leave a comment on paragraph 3 1 Twitter can start wars. Those wars are just people voicing their opinions, as they can’t always do it in person. And even then, when the conference is done, people go on twitter to rant about what they think.  People want to be heard.  And that is not necessarily a bad thing. You get many opinions on something and from that you can make your own conclusions. Such as an employer.

Leave a comment on paragraph 4 2 I agree with Anonymous with the fact that not everything needs to be public.  Some people like their privacy.  If somebody wants to share what they are doing or going, that is their choice.  They obviously want people to know.  But if you posted something that an employer wouldn’t like, then you may have problems.  It is known that employers look at social media.  If they were to see something that they didn’t like, whether you are an employee of theirs or a potential employee, you risk being fired or not getting hired at all. No matter the potential that you hold.  People have to be smart about social media. It is just like talking, but with the whole world.  And there are many people who will not agree with what you say.
